The Benefits of Hardware Upgrades

System Drives

Your laptop/desktop hard drive or solid state drive is an internal device which stores data (text, images, audio & video). Upgrading the computers drive size allows you to store more photos, music and documents. Upgrading this component also improves system performance. When your system drive's memory is full, it slows down your computer because the operating system doesn't have enough free space to work adequately. To make sure that your computer isn’t slow because of a full hard drive, ensure that there is at least 500MB (megabytes) of disk space available. You can check how much free space you have by opening ‘This PC’ in the Start menu (Windows 8 &10). For Windows 7, look for 'Computer' Your main drive will normally be called ‘Windows (C:)'.

Hard Drives Vs Solid State Drives

A Hard Drive, or HDD, relies on a spinning disk, or platter, to read and write data which makes them physically limited to how fast they can perform read and write operations. The physical platter inside these drives also makes them more prone to failure if dropped or mishandled.

A Solid State Drive, or SSD, uses Flash Memory which is similar to what is used in USB stick drives. Solid State Drives do not contain any moving parts which allow them to perform much faster than a typical hard drive disk.

Upgrading your computer from a Hard Disk Drive to a Solid State Drive will dramatically improve your computer's operating speed and start up times. On average, a Solid State Drive can perform 4 times faster than a Hard Drive of equal size.

You can find out what type of drive your system has by going to Control Panel/Device Manager and clicking on Disk Drives. The letters HDD or SSD should be in the drive's name.

Memory/RAM

The memory or RAM (Random Access Memory) serves as computer's short-term memory, where data that the processor is currently using is stored temporarily. The amount of memory in your computer directly affects the performance of many of the computers processes. Having too little will cause you computer to run very slowly. This will cause slowdowns when running more than one program or app and even surfing the internet with multiple tabs open in your browser. Even web browsers load faster after a memory upgrade, regardless of Internet connection speed. Also, computer users who are fond of gaming will also benefit from additional memory. Games run more smoothly without slower response times, and Images in a game will be noticeably cleaner and brighter with a memory upgrade.

The amount of memory your computer can have is dependant upon the make and model.

Graphics Card (Graphics Processing Unit / GPU)

A graphics card (or video card) is a piece of computer hardware in desktop PC's and some laptops that’s responsible for producing the 3D images you see on your monitor. Although a Graphics Card's primary purpose is running more powerful games at a better image quality, upgrading your graphics also helps with image modification, video editing, and playing high-resolution video, such as movies and streaming content. So If you want to boost your computer’s visual performance, you should look at an upgrade to improve its graphics.
